Saint Benedict Menni | Prophet of Hospitality

Saint Benedict Menni

A Prophet of Hospitality, whose compassion and vision laid the foundation for a global mission of care for the most vulnerable.

A Man Moved by Compassion

Saint Benedict Menni was a man passionate about God and humanity. He dedicated his entire life to making the message of the Good Samaritan a reality. He was not indifferent to suffering and vulnerability, committing himself to the promotion of holistic health, particularly for those suffering from mental illness.

"A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers... A Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him."

His Journey of Service

Born in Milan, Italy, in 1841, Angelo Ercole Menni's life took a pivotal turn when he witnessed the Brothers of St. John of God caring for wounded soldiers. Inspired by their dedication, he joined the Hospitaller Order in 1860, changing his name to Benedict.

He was ordained as a priest in 1866 and soon after, was entrusted by Pope Pius IX with the complex mission of restoring the defunct Hospitaller Order in Spain. He began this monumental task in 1867. This restoration was so successful that it was followed by similar efforts in Portugal and Mexico.

His most significant achievement came on May 31, 1881, when he founded the Congregation of Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

"He was a man of inexhaustible charity and exceptional leadership, invariably seeing the whole person with creative generosity, and seeking the good in the vulnerable."

Benedict Menni died in 1914, but his legacy lives on through the work of the Sisters Hospitallers. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1985 and later canonized in 1999. His sanctity is a beacon for all who experience and practice hospitality, reminding us that care is a sacred and transformative act.
