The 'Telema' centre helps and shelters the mentally ill in Kinshasa

Accused of being possessed by evil spirits, the mentally ill of Kinshasa often end up on the streets without care or help. The Telema centre, run by the Hospitaller Sisters, provides shelter, treatment, and dignity to those abandoned by society.
In a city where mental illness is frequently misunderstood and stigmatized, the centre offers a lifeline. Residents receive psychiatric care, psychological support, food, shelter, and the simple human kindness that many have never experienced.
“Many of our residents arrive after being chained by their families, who believe they are possessed,” explains one of the sisters working at the centre. “Our first task is to show them that they are human beings worthy of love and care.”
The centre’s work extends beyond individual treatment. Through community outreach and education, the sisters work to change perceptions about mental illness in Kinshasa, one conversation at a time.
Despite limited resources and significant challenges, the Telema centre continues to grow, driven by the belief that every person deserves compassionate care regardless of their condition or circumstances.
