The Heart of Our Mission: Historical Consciousness

Historical Consciousness

From our humble beginnings to a global mission of care. Our history is not just a memory—it’s the force that drives our present.

Our Story, Your Legacy

Since the foundation of the Sisters Hospitallers in **1881** by **Saint Benito Menni**, together with **María Josefa Recio** and **María Angustias Giménez**, our commitment has been rooted in the dignity of care. Historical consciousness is the living memory of our past that gives purpose and identity to every action we take today. It is the very heartbeat of our present mission.

"Beauty embodies a virtue that reflects the beauty of God… ensuring dignity, decorum and culture in our words and deeds."

Our Guiding Founders

Saint Benedict Menni

Saint Benedict Menni

Born in Milan, Italy in 1841, Angelo Ercole Menni was a man of profound compassion. As a member of the Brothers of St. John of God, he was sent to Spain in 1867 to revitalize the order. Confronted by the dire state of psychiatric care, he was a true visionary who founded the Sisters Hospitallers in Ciempozuelos in 1881. His legacy is one of **innovation in psychiatric care** and an unwavering commitment to dignity for the most vulnerable.

María Josefa Recio and María Angustias Giménez

María Josefa Recio & María Angustias Giménez

María Josefa Recio (born in Granada, 1846) and María Angustias Giménez (born in Granada, 1849) were the courageous women who answered the call of service alongside Saint Benedict Menni. They left their homes to join him, with María Josefa becoming the first Superior General, leading with compassion and vision. María Angustias, for her part, contributed with a deep spirituality and perseverance. Their sacrifice, friendship, and pioneering spirit shaped the heart of our Congregation and laid the groundwork for a global mission.

A Living Legacy of Care

From a small clinic in Spain, our Congregation has grown to serve in over **25 countries**. This growth is a testament to our enduring historical consciousness. We are not just a collection of facilities; we are a network of hope, built on the foundation of our history. Our hospitals and centers are spaces of healing that carry the memory and values of our founders, ensuring that every patient is treated with **respect, dignity, and love**.

The Future is Built on Our Past

Today, this historical consciousness guides our training, shapes our physical spaces, and informs our every action. The archives of our history are not gathering dust—they are alive in each act of care, each smile shared, and each hand held. We are the guardians of a sacred history, called to preserve and renew it for generations to come.
